Our School

West Patent Elementary School (WPES) is one of five elementary schools in the Bedford Central School District. Opened in November of 1970, the WPES campus is snuggled into 44 wooded acres among horse farms, stone walls, and elegant homes in northern Westchester County's Bedford, New York. Although the one-floor, totally accessible building is physically isolated from nearby towns and is protected by trees and shrubs of all types, the environment inside the building represents all of life's diversity, enthusiasm, and challenge. We pride ourselves on being a neighborhood school, and draw our diverse population from different areas. WPES has an open floor plan, which provides a true child-centered and collaborative learning environment.

At West Patent, we believe in the importance of teaching the whole child and in providing a nurturing, academically rigorous learning environment where students feel accepted, supported, are taught to respect each other, and feel comfortable taking academic risks. There is a feeling of enthusiasm, passion, inclusivity and a sense of community as you enter WPES.

We are incredibly proud to be recognized to be a National School of Character, recognized by the Character.org in 2017 and re-certified in 2022. There is an emphasis on service learning and on creating a school-wide culture of kindness. Being kind to others is a clear expectation and our school symbol, Kit the fox cub, is to be seen throughout the building and serves as a constant reminder to all to, “Be Kind Every Day. It’s the West Patent Way.”

WPES has an extremely dedicated and caring faculty, staff and parent organization, WPESA. We are privileged to have a diverse population of children and adults with various talents and children with various learning styles. We are fortunate and grateful for the educational and social experiences these differences provide the school community.

If you are a prospective family or would like to learn more about WPES, we encourage you to look around our website to learn more, and contact us if you have any questions. We would be happy to welcome you into our school community!
